Toilet Seat Installation and Sizing

Kohler Ditto K4718 & K4637 Designer Toilet Seat

Size Does Matter
Not all toilet seats are created equally. For example, elongated toilet seats do not fit well on a standard round toilet bowl, and vice versa.

If you are purchasing a new toilet that does not include a toilet seat, the required seat specifications may be included. However, if you are purchasing a replacement toilet seat, you may have to measure to ensure you get the right size.

When measuring, start from the center front of bowl back to the center of the hinge posts. The standard distance between hinge posts is 5 1/2 inches. Standard elongated bowl size is approximately 18 1/2 inches long and require elongated seats. Standard round bowl size is approximately 16 1/2 inches long and require round seats.

Installation
Once you have the correct size, the installation is easy. Instructions are normally included with the new seat, but if not, use the steps below as a guide.

  • Step 1: If this is a replacement seat, remove the old seat by taking out the old screws.
  • Step 2: Slide the new screws through the holes behind the bowl opening.
  • Step 3: Thread the washer up the bolt from under the bowl, taking care that the beveled side of the washer is facing up against the toilet bowl.
  • Step 4: Fit the nut over the bolt and tighten, taking care not to over-tighten.

In just a few easy steps, you will be enjoying your new toilet seat.
